May 14 International expert Zheng Renyuan visits the school to analyze the secrets to corporate survival.
On May 7, 2026, the Department of Finance and Cooperative Management at National Taipei University hosted a special lecture, inviting Mr. Cheng Jen-Yuan, Senior Investment Strategy and Business Advisor for Greater China at Fidelity Investments, to share his insights on "The Statistical Laws of Corporate Failure in the United States." This lecture is an important part of the department's industry-academia collaboration with Fidelity Investments this academic year, titled "Fidelity Sustainable Finance Leadership: Academic Research and Professional Talent Cultivation," aiming to deepen students' understanding of international financial markets and sustainable business operations.
The event was opened with a welcoming speech by Dean Huang Chi-jui of the Business School, who, along with Professor Ko Wen-kan, Head of the Department of Finance and Cooperative Management, presented certificates of appreciation and gifts to express their sincere gratitude to Consultant Cheng for traveling a long distance to share his valuable practical experience with the students. The lecture attracted a large number of faculty and students, expanding academic boundaries through the perspective of an international asset management expert. Many participating faculty members also engaged in in-depth exchanges with Consultant Cheng on practical and academic matters at the post-lecture luncheon, from which all attendees benefited greatly.
The "Father of Target Date Funding" will be present to provide cross-disciplinary analysis of the corporate life cycle.
The invited speaker, Advisor Cheng Jen-Yuan, enjoys a prestigious reputation in the investment industry. He previously served as Chief Investment Officer and Fund Manager at Fidelity Investments' International Asset Allocation Group. After joining Fidelity in 1994, he successfully participated in the development of the revolutionary "Target Date Fund (TDF)," earning him the title of "Father of Target Date Funds" in the industry. He also spearheaded the 529 University Investment Program and possesses extensive practical experience in international finance.
In his lecture, Consultant Zheng combined biology and organizational behavior, using phenomena such as species extinction and the exit of US listed companies as starting points to guide students in exploring the life cycle of enterprises. He pointed out that the "death" of biological species and corporate organizations has a high degree of similarity in statistical patterns. However, unlike biological systems, which increase in efficiency with scale (following the 0.75 power law), human organizations often experience cost increases exceeding scale increases during expansion due to increased internal connections and organizational complexity, leading to the phenomenon of "diseconomies of scale."
Deciphering the Secrets to Corporate Longevity and Strengthening ESG Governance Resilience
Consultant Zheng emphasized that for companies to extend their lifespan, they must focus on continuous innovation, maintain process diversity, and effectively control the growth of internal complexity and "entropy" while pursuing growth. Failure to effectively control these internal resistances will lead to challenges such as declining operational efficiency and increased risks from external shocks.
These perspectives resonate strongly with the core values emphasized in current ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) and sustainable finance. Through the lens of portfolio management and corporate lifecycles, the faculty and students gained a profound understanding that sustainable operations are not limited to environmental issues, but encompass the overall resilience of organizational governance, resource allocation, risk management, and long-term competitiveness.
Industry-academia collaboration aligns with international standards, cultivating a new generation of sustainable financial elites.
The industry-academia collaboration project between the Department of Finance and Cooperative Management at National Taipei University and Fidelity Investments not only focuses on ESG concepts and the integration of academic resources, but also includes aspects such as "sustainable data research and academic output," "Fidelity Sustainability Scholarship," and "sustainable certification and practical participation subsidies."
The Department of Finance and Cooperative Management at National Taipei University will continue to enhance students' understanding of sustainable investment and risk management through diverse activities such as industry-academia collaboration, academic seminars, and practical exchanges, striving to cultivate a new generation of professionals for Taiwan's financial market who possess international vision, practical skills, and sustainable thinking.

National Taipei University Signs Partnership Deal with University of Illinois Chicago College of Business Administration
Expanding Global Collaboration in Higher Education
National Taipei University’s College of Business and the International College of Sustainability and Innovation have officially signed a partnership agreement with the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) College of Business Administration, marking a significant step forward in global academic cooperation. The deal strengthens ties between the two institutions and opens new opportunities for research, faculty and student exchanges, and international collaboration.
Under the agreement, graduate students from the two college will be eligible to join UIC’s dual-degree programs, choosing either a two-year MBA or a one-year MS track. Through the credit transfer arrangement, the MBA track could be shortened to a one‑year program. Undergraduate students will also have the chance to apply to UIC during their senior year and continue on to its MS program after graduation.
One of the most notable aspects of the partnership is its fixed tuition structure. UIC will offer a tuition discount of about 35 percent compared to the standard rate for international students, significantly reducing the financial burden for participants.
UIC’s business programs are all STEM-certified, meaning graduates will qualify for up to three years of Optional Practical Training (OPT) in the United States. This gives students valuable opportunities to gain professional experience in the U.S. job market and enhance their global competitiveness.
The collaboration underscores a shared commitment by National Taipei University and University of Illinois Chicago to advancing higher education through practical cooperation. According to both institutions, the partnership will foster academic exchange, talent development, and broaden international opportunities for students.
